Action/Use:
- Phenobarbital is a barbiturate, nonselective central nervous system (CNS) depressants. It works by depressing the central nervous system. This aids in relaxing and going to sleep.
- Used as: Sedatives.
- Hypnotics, for the short-term treatment of insomnia, since they appear to lose their effectiveness for sleep induction and sleep maintenance after 2 weeks
- Anticonvulsant, in anesthetic doses, in the emergency control of certain acute convulsive episodes Relief of anxiety, tension, and fear, and the treatment of certain types of seizures, especially in emergency situations.
